The story behind the image

The town of Clinton in British Columbia offers an authentic wild-west atmosphere – more trucks than cars, horses on green paddocks, and not too many tourists.

We stayed for a night in 2002 and took a walk along the main street – Highway 97 –in the late afternoon. It is also known as Cariboo Highway.

Next to the The Grill & Chop Suey Restaurant (now Gold Mountain Restaurant) we discovered this weird building that had been designed in a unique, old-western or gold rush era style, including the Bucking Ham Palace Hotel and the Hickory Daiquiry Doc. Of course, these names were apparently jokes, but the general architectural theme is characteristic of Clinton, which is known for its rich history tied to the Cariboo Gold Rush.

The building was still present as of April 2025.
