The story behind the image
Recently I acquired a historic postcard from 1911 which shows the harbour of Kappeln in Germany with the majestic St. Nikolai church and several ships lined up at the main pier at the street called ‘Am Hafen’ (At the Harbour). As far as I can see they are all sailing boats.
The beauty of this shot is not the image itself – I think it shows too much of the sky and the water – but the fact that the skyline and first row of houses looks almost identical today. Most of the buildings look like they looked about 115 years ago. Sure, some have been replaced by modern buildings that mimic the historic look. And one building has been added at the far left of the image. But all-in-all, it seems that Kappeln could preserve its historic roots.
This makes it a true gem.
As several ancesters of my family come from Kappeln and surrounding villages, and they got baptized, confirmed at this church, and they got buried on the nearby graveyard. That’s why this postcard goes to the family archive now.
