Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy (III)

The story behind the image

From Lerici in Italy, you can easily visit the famous Cinque Terre – five villages built very close to the cliff. They can be reached only by train or by using a hike called Via dell’ Amore (“Street of Love” in English) which starts in Riomaggiore (the first of the five villages). We recommend using the train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore.

The first part of the hike (from Riomaggiore to Manarola) was easy but nevertheless impressing. However, the second part, from Manarola to Corniglia took us much longer than expected. It was quite exhausting to walk in the heat of noon. When we finally reached Corniglia, we paused and decided to take the train for the last leg to Vernazza. (We also decided to leave out Monterosso al Mare, the last of the five villages, as it would have taken us too long.)

In Vernazza we walked down to the harbour using Via Roma, the main street of the village. My photo shows the narrow street with its several small shops, restaurants and cafés. A perfect example for a typical Italian town. Seeing the town like this also explains why there is no traffic allowed. There simply is not enough space for cars and people.
