Generative AI in Art
Another Sunday morning, another item of my series exploring generative AI for art. As you may already know, I took the beautiful sunset image that ChatGPT had created for me and requested a visualization in various styles to see and compare the results. I call this series Sunset in AI-Land.
So far, I’ve done it for several styles, ranging from pointilism, cubism, and pop art, to comic style, surrealism, neo-expressionism, and more. I like them. Some more, some less, but they are all impressive in a way.
This time I asked ChatGPT to create a realistic looking historical postcard lithography from the uploaded image. When these colorized postcards where popular, they were looking like a mix between a photo and a lithography. The scene would clearly resemble (and be created from) a photo, but the colors were artificially added. Hence the lack of realism in the image.
Here’s the (long) prompt:
Create an image from the uploaded file that looks like a a vintage postcard illustration or chromolithograph, a popular printing technique in the 1800s to early 1900s used for postcards and prints. Color Palette: Soft pastels and muted tones dominate the image, with delicate shading that creates a dreamy, almost romantic atmosphere. Avoid yellow color shift. Brushwork/Detail: The detailing is fine but impressionistic, prioritizing mood and atmosphere over precise realism. Keep the original aspect ratio of 4 (width) to 3 (height)!
ChatGPT came up with a good result from just this prompt. However, I think the image is a bit boring, actually, as the soft pastle colors (which I requested) did not match the beautiful sunset scene. I only realized this later on.
But it’s still a nice visualization of an entirely fictious scene that took just minutes to create.
