UNDATED – Portrait of a young lady. © by Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com/Photo: August Lutz
The story behind the image
Here’s an old cabinet photo that I purchased recently. It shows a young lady in the photo studio of August Lutz in Gera, Germany. As so often, the image does not carry any notes or dates, so it is quite difficult to find out more about her and get to know her.
It is even challenging to find out the approximate date easy to determine when the image was shot, though. It is likely to be between 1888 and 1907, because the back says just “Photogr. Atelier” (Photo Studio). Photos produced after 1907 carry the promotional line Hofphotograph, a title most likely awarded by the Princely House of Reuss, since Gera was part of the Principality of Reuss of the younger line (until 1918).
The clothing of the lady matches the fashion of the late 1880s to early 1890s, so we can assume that the image was shot around 1890.
I like the image.
