The story behind the image

When you visit Porto Santo Stefano in Italy, I recommend driving along the Via Panoramica to explore the west coast of the Monte Argentario peninsula. You’ll get to see countless exciting views.

One word of caution, though: The Via Panoramica circles the peninsula, and it’s tempting to take the full circle. And we did. But back in 2012, the section between Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole turned into a gravel road, and it was a bad one. (It starts here going east.) While it appears to be a short distance – ‘just’ 4 kilometers – it might wreck your nerves and your car! So, please do yourself a favor, and turn around when you see the beginning of the dirt road. Of course, if you’ve got a 4×4, it should not pose a problem.

Our Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 TSpark managed the gravel road just so-so, and indeed, Petra and I were sweating through this section of the road. Looking at this image I wonder what we would have done if a car would have come upfront?
