The story behind the image
In 2003, we spent two nights at the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The weather had been perfect for the past couple of days, and so we were able to experience a stunning time on the South Rim.
One day we took the (very easy) hike along the rim from the Yavapai Point to Grand Canyon Village, and we were surprised to see a train line ending there. And guess what? We were lucky! A train was waiting for departure. This enabled me to shoort a couple of nice images of the sturdy locomotive GCRY 6776 from 1959. Up until about 2015 it carried the dark brown paint seen on my image. Since that summer the locomotive has a silver finish with the same color applications in orange and red as above.
Sadly, the locomotive has been retired in 2009 and at the time of writing was on static display at the Grand Canyon Village station.
Here is an interesting article covering the essentials of the Grand Canyon Railroad line. You can also visit the official homepage for more information and book your tickets.
