The story behind the image
We entered Arizona when we crossed the Colorado River near Topock and headed north on the Oatman-Topock Highway, towards Kingman, our final destination for the day.
As much as we liked the smooth driving on highway 40, we were looking for a more authentic experience and thought that the ‘real’ highway 66 would be perfect. There was significantly less traffic, which was nice, too. But – the sun was about to set soon, and we were in the middle of the mountain range west of Kingman with countless turns and serpentines. This used to be gold-diggers country, and it is probably very much like it was 200 years ago – a rural, quiet place.
Kingman was still an hour away but this did not stop me from taking a couple of photos.
Needless to say, we were quite happy when we finally reached Kingman.
