Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy (VI)

AUGUST 2000 – In Manarola, Italy, tourists use a boat ramp as a platform for taking a sunbath and for accessing the water for swimming. © Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com

The story behind the image

From Lerici in Italy, you can easily visit the famous Cinque Terre – five villages built very close to the cliff. They can be reached only by train or by using a hike called Via dell’ Amore (“Street of Love” in English) which starts in Riomaggiore (the first of the five villages). We recommend using the train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore.

The first part of the hike (from Riomaggiore to Manarola) is easy but nevertheless impressing. Despite their isolated location, the villages do have a very good touristical infrastructure. But, let’s face it, they are not really suitable for beach holidays as there are just the ramps for the fisher boats or extremely small beaches. There simply is not enough space for nice and large beaches.

My photo shows that the people in Manarola did not care and got their tan anyway by using the boat ramp as (sun-) bathing platforms. 🙂

Lovely.

P.S.: Prior to your hike from Riomaggiore to Manarola, please check whether the Via dell’ Amore is actually open to the public. Every now and then, severe weather conditions destroy the path (partly) so it has to be closed by the local authorities to prevent injuries.
