The story behind the image

From Lerici in Italy, you can easily visit the famous Cinque Terre – five villages built very close to the cliff. They can be reached only by train or by using a hike called Via dell’ Amore (“Street of Love” in English) which starts in Riomaggiore (the first of the five villages). We recommend using the train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore and then hike to Manarola. It is an easy hike but nevertheless impressing.

As the villages have been built so close to the rocks, there is really little space for anything. That’s why there are just very few tiny beaches (if at all) and that’s why you cannot access the villages by car. Still, you will find a very good touristical infrastructure, i.e. hotels, restaurants, bars, shops.

My photo shows Via Renato Birolli, the main street of Manarola. The fishermen have parked their boats along the street like you would park your cars in other towns. 🙂 This highlights the importance of fishing for Manarola. By the way, this has not changed at all over the past 25 years. Recent images from Manarola confirm that the boats are still parked along the main street.

Lovely.
