Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy (I)

The story behind the image

From Lerici in Italy, you can easily visit the famous Cinque Terre – five villages built very close to the cliff. The best way to reach them is by train (departing from Lerici) or by using a hike called Via dell’ Amore (“Street of Love” in English) which starts in Riomaggiore (the first of the five villages).

The first part of the hike (from Riomaggiore to Manarola) is easy but nevertheless impressing. Despite their isolated location, the villages do have a very good touristical infrastructure. But, let’s face it, they are not really suitable for beach holidays as there are no or just tiny beaches.

My photo shows the village of Vernazza that features at least a tiny beach that is shared with the harbour. But this is probably still much better than in Manarola where you just have the boat ramps for sunbathing or accessing the water.

On the right you can see the Chiesa di Santa Margherita di Antiochia, a small catholic church that has its origins in the 14th century.
