The story behind the image
We made it along the narrow, busy, and extremely winded S.S. 16 Amalfitana and were happy to have found a room for the night in Amalfi. We stayed at the Hotel Aurora in the western part of the town.
My photo shows the view from the patio of our hotel room towards west. The Grotta delle Sirene, a small cave, was just a few steps away, but we were not too impressed by it. Basically, it is a much smaller version of the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) on the island of Capri. If I remember correctly, back in 2000 there were (very short) guided tours in rowing boats through the rather dark grotto.

The town center of Amalfi, however, offers a lot to the tourists: a rich history, small and narrow streets, a nice, (relatively) large beach, and all amenities you’d expect.
Here’s what I wrote about the Hotel Aurora on my old site: “The hotel is situated close to the old harbour, right on the sea. It is just a short walk to the town center, so you are a bit off the beaten tourist tracks, and you will be able to enjoy the tranquility of the hotel. Some of the rooms have an awesome view towards the sea. While it certainly is not a ‘grand hotel’ like the hotel described in Billy Wilder’s excellent movie ‘Avanti!’, it is in our opinion better than its official three-star rating may suggest, both in terms of room quality and customer service. No wonder to us, as the hotel has just 29 rooms, and the hotel staff can take care of your wishes quite fast. All-in-all, a very good hotel.”
