The story behind the image
About 10 kilometers west of Pienza in Italy we found the village San Quirico d’Orcia. For the traveller, it is easy to ignore the village. Siena to the north is bigger and one of the touristic highlights of the region, Montepulciano (in the east) is well known by wine lovers, and Pienza is stuffed with history. And the Strada Statale 2 passes the village conveniently when heading for the Lago di Bolsena in the south.
We took the detour and fell immediately in love with this simple, traditional, genuine village. It has it all: cozy, narrow streets, old churches, and even small, yet beautiful gardens.
My photo shows the historic church Parrocchia SS Quirico e Giulitta that dates back to the 12th century. Wikipedia knows more (in Italian.)
Lovely.
