The story behind the image

On our long trip through Italy in 2000 we stopped for one night in Pienza. As the weather was really mixed, we decided to check in early and just explore the town. The next morning we continued our trip to Montepulciano which is just a few kilometers away and very well worth a visit. You should park your car outside the town (at the foot of the hill) and walk the way up to the historic church.

I shot this image at Via di Ciliano, and I love it because it shows the traditional Italy far away from the big cities and even tourist hot spots. A narrow street that still has enough room for a single car that has been parked at the side. The Fiat Panda can easily pass it! Who said there’s not enough room in these towns? 😉

The narrow house in the center of the image is also remarkable as it not only looks small from the outside but must also be small inside. If you want, this is an early Italian variant of the tiny houses that have become fashionable more recently.

Lovely.

P.S.: The only thing that has changed since September 2000? Now the community has put up a sign for a ‘zona di divieto di sosta’ (no-parking zone) where the car was parked. (Italy being Italy, I sense that the sign is mostly ignored by the locals, though.)
