The story behind the image
26 years ago we sailed on board of the tall ship Mir during the Kiel Week. I captured several awesome photos of small and large ships. This photo shows the Nordwind Y834 on its way back to Kiel. In the back you can see Kiel’s military harbour with the tender ship Rhein A513 (left), the multi-purpose ship Stollergrund Y864 (center) and the Submarine S191 (aka ‘U 12’, right behind the Nordwind Y834).
I really like this shot because I could capture the shimmering sea as it was illuminated by the frontal sun – creating a perfect maritime mood (for me).
The history of the Nordwind Y 834 is long winded. Construction started before 1945 but was completed in 1948. It received a fish vessel registration but never was actively fishing. Instead, it went to the German coast guard as a training ship. Today, it is apparently owned by the German Marine Museum in Wilhelmshaven.
More on the history of the Nordwind Y 834 can be found at schiffsspotter.de (in German.)
