The story behind the image

This photo of our recent trip to Bellaria Igea Marina in Italy shows the monument that remembers the brave men from Bellaria Idea Marina who dedicated their lives to the sea and died while on duty. Situated right next to the working harbour, several plates show also the incidents and names of the crews:

  • Trabaccolo „Seconda“ – January 17, 1929
  • Trabaccolo „Sereti“ – December 12, 1933
  • Trabaccolo „Maria B“ – October 18, 1937
  • Trabaccolo „C. Colombo“ – July 25, 1945
  • M/P „Giovanni & Glelia“ – December 20, 1949

The early morning sun created a warm and pleasant light, the sky was clear, and the statue looked just perfect. As tragic as the deaths have been, at least this monument is a beautiful way to remember the losses.

A Trabaccolo, by the way, is a type of sailing coaster typical for this part of the Adriatic Sea. The name refers to the word trabacca (tent) which in turn recalls the vessel’s sails.
