The story behind the image
On good days, Lake Garda in Italy is ‘just’ a four-hour drive from Munich, Germany, but it has that genuine Italian flair that makes the drive worthwhile. Both the weather is usually warmer than in Germany and the mood and culture of the people are great.
I shot this image from the Via Lungolago Guglielmo Marconi near the ‘I Love Limone’ sign (which was not there in 2001.) Since Limone is situated on the western side of the lake, the sun disappears early, dipping the entire town into shadows. This can be great on hot days.
I was early enough to catch the late afternoon sun. The contrast adds depth and drama to the rocks above the village.
We recommend to visit the town by ship as there are few parking lots and these are usually quite busy. The ships connect to Malcesine, Torbole and Riva del Garda.
By the way, driving aorund the lake may sound like an exciting idea – and we did this once! – but it becomes a real effort after a while, especially for the section between Riva del Garda and Limone where the road is narrow and curvy. Did you know that the car chase scene in Casino Royale (2006) has been filmed exactly on this section? (Even better: Bond is being chased by folks in an Alfa Romeo 159. Wow.)
