The story behind the image

I grew up with this view. My parents had moved into the first floor of the building Tilsiter Weg 2a in Altenholz-Stift near Kiel. That was in 1969, and I was just 3 and a half years old. The appartment was great, and I can still remember countless details, but this view was priceless – the word ‘beautiful’ is too weak for this.

The pond in front of the manor was my favorite place during cold winters (when it was frozen.) I was the first on the ice and almost the last one to go home as it was just a few steps away.

Off the right edge of the photo was the bus station, and it was quite busy. In the morning the kids from the wider area would arrive, and commuters (including my mom) would head for the city of Kiel to get to their workplaces. Around noon the kids were heading back home, and in the evenings the commuters would return.

Our small family stayed in the appartment for 15 years before my father died and I moved out. My mother also moved to the city center of Kiel.

The place has not changed significantly since the photo was taken early in spring 1976. The railing is gone, but everything else is pretty much the same.

Ah, the memories!
