The story behind the image
Sunsets – like most people I love them, most of the time.
This photo shows California Highway 12 near Fairfield, and we were not really happy about the setting sun. Not only was it quite irritating to drive against the setting sun, but we had not booked an accommodation in advance and were a bit puzzled as to where we would find one. The setting sun wouldn’t make that task easier. Remember, 2003 was before mobile phones became smart and mobile Internet was still in the proof-of-concept phase, so we couldn’t simply tap a query into the phone and find the next hotels or B&Bs.
Nonetheless, I still stopped the car to take the photo because it was awesome. The buzz of the evening traffic, the mountain range in the background, the dominance of orange and yellow colors. Just beautiful.
From here we continued our drive to Petaluma where we finally found a room at the Motel 6 (now Park Inn by Radisson), and we were really happy about this as it was already night when we checked in.
