The story behind the image
Our detour along Scotland’s Castle Route in the Royal Deeside came to an end with a stop at Crathes Castle before we headed for the coast again.
Crathes Castle was built in the 16th century by the Burnetts of Leys and was owned by the family for almost 400 years. The castle is an excellent example of a tower house which was popular (among the rich) back then. A visit to its interior is well worth the money as some rooms still carry their original painted ceilings and old oak panels. What’s more, the castle walls hold many stories of the Burnett family for you to discover. Equally beautiful are the gardens of the castle.
At the time of writing, the castle is open to the public. More information can be found on the excellent official site which also features some videos. Wikipedia has a good article as well.
