The story behind the image

Last month we did a day-trip to visit the New Castle Herrenchiemsee which is situated on the Herreninsel within the Chiemsee in Bavaria.

It had been a short, relaxed boat trip from Prien to the island. The 20 minute walk from the landing pier to the castle made me forget that we were actually on an island. We approached the castle from the north west corner of the beautiful gardens. Several large fountains and basins greeted us.

My photo shows the view along the Big Channel (Grosser Kanal in German) with the village of Prien in the background.

The castle itself can only be visited with a guided tour, and it was exciting to see the over-decorated rooms of King Ludwig II of Bavaria who is still an icon in Bavaria today. He had been quite a character but was also interested in modern technology. The castle, for example, already had a central heating system – a novelty when the castle was built. (It was rarely used, though, because the rooms were so large and the cost for heating the entire castle was very high.)

When in the area, do not miss to visit Prien am Chiemsee and the Herreninsel.
