The story behind the image
July 2005. Our stop for the night was Elgin, a vibrant town with a number of Bed and Breakfasts, hotels and restaurants.
The weather was nasty. Earlier that day we had sunshine but it got worse every hour. When we had checked in, dark clouds approached Elgin, but we were used to that already, so we took our raincoats and explored the town. Lady Hill was just a stone-throw away from our B&b, the West End Guest House in 282 High Street. The monument at its top is actually the Duke of Gordon’s Monument.
It was erected in honor of George Gordon, 5th Duke of Gordon, and stands prominently on an old castle mound where the medieval Elgin Castle once stood. The tower is designed in the form of a Doric column, with a statue of the Duke on top. Wikipedia has more details.
I shot this photo from the A96. It would have been great to capture it in sunshine, but that’s the way it is. I still like it.
