The story behind the image
I shot this image of my father while we were in Paris, France, in 1979. This had been my first genuine holiday trip to a foreign country – the few short trips to Denmark in my childhood do not count in my view. My mother was a big fan of all things French, and she could convince my father to do the trip to Paris.
So we took the night train from Kiel, Germany, via Hamburg to Paris Gare du Nord, and arrived (a bit tired) in the morning in Paris. But the energy of the pulsating city worked its magic, and we were prepared to explore the city for almost a week.
I like this image a lot. At the age of 40, he looks happy, relaxed, and confident.
Thinking of you, Dad. I will always love you.
