The story behind the image

In 2004 we travelled to South Africa for the first time. We wanted to start easy and discover the beauty of the so-called Garden Route – that’s the area between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha).

For the first part of the trip we drove from Cape Town through the hills via Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Robertson, Oudtshorn, and Willowmore to Addo. (For the second part we followed the coastline closely.)

East of Oudtshorn the roads were almost empty, and there were just very few places of interest. We had intended to stay in Uniondale for a night, and I took this image of the town during our approach. The afternoon sunlight beautifully illuminated the majestic church, and we would have loved to stay for a night. Sadly, there were no rooms available in the hotels and B&Bs we inquired. So, we continued our drive on the N9, the next stop being Willowmore. In fact, we were slightly concerned now that we might have to sleep in the car.

What’s more, all of a sudden it was getting really dark as a thunder storm was quickly coming in from north. Fortunately we managed to find the Villa d’Lockyer in Willowmore before the rain was pouring down on us!

We did not have to sleep in the car!
