The story behind the image
In County Mayo in Ireland we were extremely lucky to stay at a very remote place, even by Co. Mayo’s standards. Clare Island Lighthouse was offered as an exclusive B&B back then – and they had a room available for us for one night! Done deal!
So, we parked our car at the ferry car park in Roonagh Point and took the small passenger ferry to Clare Island. Our friendly landlord awaited us at the harbour to bring three couples to the lighthouse at the northern tip of the island. Our car: the sturdy Land Rover Series III that you see above! And I shared the seat in the back with the luggage and a large black dog!

The weather was not good at all and got worse by the minute. When we reached the lighthouse, it was pouring rain! Nevertheless, it was a fantastic evening with excellent food in the main building and an exciting night that Petra and I spent in the appartment located in the former lighthouse tower. Just wow!
Sadly, the lighthouse had not been available as accommodation for many years to follow, but recently I came across the (new) website of the lighthouse which indicates that it is now available again for exclusive stays. Hoorah!
