The story behind the image
South Africa has a long coastline with fantastic beaches. This is Kings Beach in Summerstrand near Port Elizabeth (which has been renamed to Gqeberha) which can be seen in the back. Summerstrand is a beach holiday destination but thanks to its proximity to Port Elizabeth, it is also home to those who commute to work in P.E.
I composed this image from two slides, resulting in a 42 megapixel image. I know it’s tiny by todays huge sensor sizes – but I shot the image in 2004. These were different times.
In any event, the image works really well for wide formats and triggers the desire to dive into the image and inspect the countless details closer.
