The story behind the image
I found this old photo in the archives, shot by a relative from Oldenburg (Lower Saxonia) in Germany.
The photo shows the ferry “Niedersachsen” as it departs the habour of Cuxhaven. The robust vessel could transport both vehicles and passengers. It played a significant role in the post-war ferry service between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel. It was originally operated by the Fährschiff Seelotse GmbH, a shipping company founded by Cuxhaven sea pilots to resume ferry service across the river Elbe. The “Niedersachsen” was one of the main vessels on this route.
From May 1969, the HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG took over the operations of the Elbe ferry between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel. The “Niedersachsen” continued to operate on this route, now under the management of HADAG.
After several decades in service, the “Niedersachsen” was finally decommissioned when ferry service between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel was discontinued.
The story of the “Niedersachsen”, however, remains a significant chapter in the region’s maritime history.
The full story of the ferry service between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel, including additional images, can be found at Cuxpedia (in German.)
