The story behind the image
This historic postcard sent in September 1911 shows lake Dieksee in Gremsmühlen in Germany.
Three elegant ladies stand on the pier while another lady sits on a bench at the promenade wearing an umbrella to protect against the sunlight. It must have been a peaceful and quiet day as no other people can be seen. The lake is very calm and mirrors the pier and nearby boat beautifully.
Since the 1890s, tourism in and around Malente and Gremsmühlen was rising steadily. People from the nearest big German cities – Hamburg, Hannover, Berlin – wanted to escape the hectic, noise, dirt, and pollution, they had at home and enjoyed the tranquility in nature. Traveling had become more affordable, and the area around Malente offered what the tourists were looking for. On postcards, visitors reported home what they had found – which attracted further visitors.
