The story behind the image

This week we did a day-trip to visit the New Castle Herrenchiemsee which is situated on the Herreninsel within the Chiemsee in Bavaria. The weather had been sunny and warm earlier but now, in the afternoon, clouds were moving in and the wind became stronger and colder.

It had been a short, relaxed boat trip from Prien to the island. The 20 minute walk from the landing pier to the castle made me forget that we were actually on an island. The castle itself can only be visited with a guided tour, and it was exciting to see the over-decorated rooms of King Ludwig II of Bavaria who is still an icon in Bavaria today. He had been quite a character but was also interested in modern technology. The castle, for example, already had a central heating system – a novelty when the castle was built. (It was rarely used, though, because the rooms were so large and the cost for heating the entire castle would have been very high.)

My photo show the beautiful panorama from the promenade in Prien. On the right there is the harbour, in the distance on the left you see the Herreninsel.

When in the area, do not miss to visit Prien am Chiemsee and the Herreninsel.
