The story behind the image

During our 1988 trip to Portugal we also stayed a couple of nights in Olhão. Right next to the harbour has been the fruit market – Mercados de Olhão – and when we entered the hall on a hot and sunny morning, the hall was a complete contrast to the outsite: It was dark. It was busy. It was cool.

I couldn’t resist to capture a photo, but it was challenging. I had not brought the tripod, so I had a problem. I did not have a “fast” 400 ASA film, and the darkness called for a longer exposure time. I picked a time that I could still hold steady. The image came out sufficiently sharp but slightly underexposed. Yet, it reflects the atmosphere and experience very well.

When in the area, don’t miss the lovely market and harbour in Olhão.
