The story behind the image
Believe me, I was not aware of this hype before. It must have come up over the past few days, and I jumped on this bandwagon – because I liked what I saw on a social post by a former colleague.
So, I tried to challenge the generative AI provided by ChatGPT and created an action figure from an image I uploaded to the online service.
I am still blown away by the result and truly think that – despite the fact that countless other people have produced a similar action figure already – it still is a piece of art. For me. Admittedly, I did some additional tweaking in Photoshop, but the image was 95% ready and even those finishing touches I could have achieved with further prompts.
A skilled photo designer would have probably taken a couple of hours to create this. ChatGPT – assisted by me – did it in a couple of minutes. Which is still amazing.
If you want to try it by yourself, here’s what I did.
1. Logged on to ChatGPT.
2. Uploaded an upper body portrait of myself by dragging it to the prompt.
3. Pasted the following instructions into the text field:
Create image. Create a toy of the person in the photo. Let it be an action figure. Next to the figure, there should be the toy’s equipment, each in its individual blisters. 1) a champions DSLR photo camera. 2) A Fender Stratocaster in torino red. 3) a new laptop. 4) A mug with the name Mark on it. 5) a book titled “Product Marketing. A Hands-On Introduction”. 6) A batch with reference to “zanzig.com”. Don’t repeat the equipment under any circumstance. The card holding the blister should be dark blue. Also, on top of the box, write ‘Mark’ and underneath it, ‘Product Marketing Action Figure’. The figure and equipment must all be inside blisters. Visualize this in a realistic way.
4. Hit the enter key
It may take a couple of minutes, but you’ll get a decent image to work with.
So cool, it’s outright scary.

P.P.S.: Generative AI for photography most certainly will be extremely tricky from a legal and from an ethical perspective. I’ll share my thoughts on this in a separate post soon.
