The story behind the photo
A holiday trip to the island of Kos, Greece, resulted in several beautiful shots of the Kos town center and the island.
We stayed at a hotel in Marmari Beach, so our ‘home beach’ was the one in front of our hotel. Back in 1994 there still was this shipwreck that rested at the beach. I’ve tried to locate it on Google Maps, but it seems to have been removed over the past three decades. There still is a wreck, but it is the German landing boat F131 from WWII and rests in the shallow water in front of the beach. (So, my photo is not that wreck.)
The late afternoon sun illuminated the wreck and its countless details nicely, and the long shadows added contrast. I shot it using a Canon AE-1 Program on negative film which got lost over the years. Fortunately I had this very good and undamaged print sitting in the archive which I scanned and slightly edited in 2025.
