The story behind the image
I found this photo in the family archive, taken on a beautiful spring day in 1961. The image shows guests of the Hotel Lautersee near Mittenwald in the Bavarian Alps in Germany. They enjoy a lunch on the patio of the hotel right next to the Lautersee lake. The majestic Lindenkopf mountain provides a stunning backdrop even if its top is in the clouds.
This is one of the rare early color photos in our archive from that period. It has survived the 60+ years with just very little damage. The colors have slightly faded, and there are tiny dark spots especially in the center of the image. Still, it is nice to see a genuine color image from that time (and not some b&w print colorized by AI.)
The area has not changed significantly. The Hotel Lauterbach operates as a B&B today, managed in the third generation by the grandson of the original owners who acquired the original restaurant business back in 1931 and extended it over time to a full blown hotel.
