The story behind the image

On good days, Lake Garda in Italy is ‘just’ a four-hour drive from Munich, Germany, but thanks to its true Italian flair it makes a genuine difference compared to daily life in Germany. This is not just true for the weather (which is usually warmer than in Germany) but also for the mood and culture.

I shot this image from the Parcheggio Lungolago Marconi. Since Limone is situated on the western side of the lake, the sun disappeared behind the mountains early that day, dipping the entire village into shadow. To avoid this, I used the short period before this happened to capture the long shadows along the mountains and buildings. These really add depth.

In case you wonder about the huge object in the center. This is a field of lemon trees and the namegiver of the town! This one is the largest but you will find a number of smaller fields scattered around the village. Of course, this is (by far) not enough to earn a decent living for all people living in Limone, but it has become a tourist magnet.

We recommend to visit the town by ship as there are few parking lots and these are usually quite busy. The ships connect to Malcesine, Torbole and Riva del Garda.

By the way, driving aorund the lake may sound like an exciting idea – and we did this once! – but it becomes a real effort after a while, especially for the section between Riva del Garda and Limone where the road is narrow and curvy. Oh, and did you know that the car chase scene in Casino Royale (2006) has been filmed exactly on this section? (Even better: Bond is being chased by folks in an Alfa Romeo 159. Wow.)
