The story behind the image

Italy! It’s beautiful and has everything you could wish for – in a single country, from high mountains to beaches, from well maintained highways to small bumpy roads.

On our road trip in 2000 we tried to avoid the large toll highways and use the smaller highways, the so-called Strade Statali. Between Parma and Berceto these streets guided us along the hills of the area with countless beautiful views and more turns than you could wish for.

My image shows the late afternoon mood in Berceto. While the town is quite busy – there are always some people on the streets – it is also quite sleepy. That’s probably because most young people seem to have left the town to study or work. The folks remaining in town do it like the old Italians do: they sit or stand in small groups in front of their houses or on the patio of a bars and take a look at what’s going on. And then they discuss.

Lovely.
