The story behind the image

Here’s another cabinet photo from the Schütze-Oßwald lot I acquired last year. This studio portrait was shot around 1905 by Heinrich Kuhlmann in Bochum, Germany.

Fortunately, several handwritten notes on the back clarify who the persons are.

On the left we see Hugo Max Arnold Schütze, a brother of Hedwig Schütze. He was born in 1868 in Magdala, Thüringen, Germany, as son of Gustav Albin Schütze and Johanne Oehlwein. Arno became a musical director and pianist and worked from 1904 to 1922 as conductor of the Philharmonic Choir Bochum. He died on 15th February 1953 in Bonn, Germany.

On the right we see his wife, Martha Wilhelmine Aline Rive. She was born in 1882.

The couple married on the 7th September 1905 in Bonn, Germany.

This large cabinet photo – an albumin print mounted on solid cardboard – carries the note “around 1905” on the back, so it is likely that is was shot shortly after their wedding. Note the ring on Arno’s right hand, which still is (in Germany) a clear indicator that the wearer is married.

The photo is generally in a good condition, especially considering its age, but the lower right corner of the cardboard has been cut off. Fortunately, the photo is not affected by this.
