The story behind the image

This historic postcard shows the old Lutheran St. Johannes Church in Kiel-Gaarden, Germany. This postcard was never sent and does not carry a date, but I did a bit of research and found the same card – and that one was sent in September 1900. So we can accurately date the image as “before or in 1900”.

The church was located at the Kirchen Straße, and both the church and the street were destroyed in 1943 during a severe air raid. This is not a big surprise because the wharf with its horrible military focus was just a stonethrow away from the church.

It was the first church in Gaarden, consecrated on November 2, 1883 with a sermon by Chief Pastor Gosch. The street was renamed after him in 1901. In 1961, the new St. Johannes church opened its doors, and the footpath next to the church was named Pastor-Gosch-Weg.

A city map of 1902 shows the location of the old St. Johannes church at the end of the Kirchen Straße in Kiel-Gaarden, Germany. The church was destroyed in 1943.
