The story behind the image
Last weekend I travelled to Northern Germany to visit meet my cousin and visit my aunt. As soon as I entered Schleswig-Holstein the landscape changed dramatically and the traffic got less busy. Finally I entered the area between Schleswig and Flensburg, and I felt at home. A good feeling. While I did not grow up exactly here (I grew up near Kiel), my ancesters had been deeply rooted near the coast of the Baltic Sea, between Flensburg and Lübeck.
This is the interior of the St. Georg church in Oeversee, a small village in the area. It dates back to the 12th century (here’s more, in German), and over time, several of my ancesters have been baptized, married and buried here. It’s exciting to find such an iconic church in the middle of nowhere. I just had my smartphone with me, but I could not resist to take a photo.
I really like the subtle light formed by the tiny windows, and I can almost feel the silence and emotion in this beautiful church.
