The story behind the image
A while ago, I shared an image of a woman lighting a candle in the basilica Sacré-Cœur in Paris, France. And this image reminded me that I did a similar shot back in September 1988.
On our long way back from Portugal to Kiel in Northern Germany, we had decided to stay for four nights in Paris. And we explored the city mostly by foot and Metro.
One day we visited Sacré-Cœur. I held my camera as steady as possible and asked my model to stay as steady as possible. I had loaded a “fast” 400 ASA negative film, and the exposure time was pretty long despite the “fast” 50 mm f/1.8 lens I used. Admittedly, the shot is a bit soft, but the motion blur by other visitors on the left was great and highlighted the almost spiritual moment of lighting a candle to remember those long gone.
Lovely.
