The story behind the image

Today is the 23rd February 2025. Around this time of the year the German Mardi Gras season (which is called Fasching over here) reaches its peak. While the biggest activity and interest can be experienced in the areas along the rivers Rhein and Main in Western Germany, there is also a small, but very active community of party-goers in Munich who celebrate the so-called Fifth Season.

The parade in Munich had been planned for today, but this year it has been cancelled due to the tragic events at the Stiglmaierplatz on the 14th February 2025. To the organizers of the parade, it just did not feel right to celebrate and party. And I wholeheartedly agree.

So I pulled this image from the archive, showing one wagon of the parade in February 2007. The wagon was run by a bar called Coellner im Paragraph, which was at the time the only bar that served beer from Cologne (where the carnival is much, much bigger.) The beer was quite different to the local Munich beers, so it was really something special and like an ex-pat meeting place for those from Cologne stranded in Muncih. (The bar closed in 2013 due to complaints about the noise level.)

A nice press photo and memory.
