The story behind the image
Here’s a real gem from our family archives: A photo of my great grandmother Eugenie with her two daughters Irmgard (born 1907, on the left) and Edith (my grandmother, born 1905.) They pose for the photographer probably in a studio in Eutin or Oldenburg in Holstein. Sadly, the name of the photographer is not mentioned (or rather, got lost when the photo was cropped.)
Looking at the girls, I think the age of 10 or 11 years seems reasonable for Edith, and 8 or 9 for Irmgard. So, I’d estimate that the photo has been captured in 1915 or maybe 1916.
By the way, I’ve been able to identify the book in Ediths hands. It’s a German edition of the classic Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This German edition was published by K. Thienemanns Verlag about 1906. I guess that this book was present at the photo studio, and the photographer simply used it as a prop so that the girls had something to hold on to.
