The story behind the image
Throughout the 20th century, tourism has constantly gained importance as an economical factor along the entire German North Sea coast. And today, hundreds of thousands people depend on tourism.
This image from the family archive shows the passenger ferry Frisia IV in the harbour of Norddeich. It was owned and operated by the Reederei Norden-Frisia AG which has a long history of providing scheduled transfer services to the islands of Juist and Norderney. These belong to a group of islands called Eastern Frisian Islands.
In August 1956, the ship was pretty new. It had been put into service only in 1953 and served the company until 1970 when it got sold to Chile. The ship did the Atlantic crossing on its own, which is a clear evidence for the robustness of the ship, even after 27 years in service.
