The story behind the image
Every once in a while I share ancient photos from my archive. Here’s a photo of a beautiful young lady of maybe 20 years who sits in a wicker chair posing for Albert Giesler, photographer in Eutin, Germany.
It was shot between 1906 and 1908 and, sadly, I don’t know anything else about this lady. No name, no comment – nothing. We can’t even see whether she wears a wedding ring. (I doubt it, though, because if she did, she’d probably show it with pride.)
Yet I really like this photo. Early on, Albert Giesler was working with poses where others were just placing the people in some standard positions in front of a (white) background. And, here the combination of demanding facial expression and modern pose work extremely well with this beautiful lady.
The technical quality is exceptional. The photo is sharp and well exposed. Despite its age of almost 120 years, the does not show any aging spots and just very few scratches.
Love it.
