The story behind the image

The town of Clinton in British Columbia offers an authentic wild-west atmosphere – more trucks than cars, horses on green paddocks, and not too many tourists.

We stayed for a night in 2002 and took a walk along the main street in the late afternoon. It is Highway 97 which is also known as Cariboo Highway.

We found this sign post where recent visitors could leave signs and messages. There was even one wooden sign from Susanne and Bernd, a German couple that had visited Clinton on 1st June 2002. When Susanne saw my article she contacted me and sent a picture of her family next to the sign tree! (Can’t share it here, but I really appreciate the email. Thank you, Susanne!)

So, what happened to the sign tree then? Well, it has been removed completely at some point in time. The restaurant on the left has changed (now The Old Parkie’s). The café opposite of the street is no longer The Grill & Chop Suey Restaurant (now the Gold Mountain Restaurant). And The Wolf’s Cry Inn a bit further down the road changed name to Old School’s Bar & Grill but seems to be closed now. Well, all this hardly comes as a surprise – 20+ years are a long time, even in British Columbia.
