The story behind the image

A while ago I shared this awesome 1896 print and this postcard, both by German photo pioneer Albert Giesler, both showing the restaurant at the promenade near the Voss House in his hometown Eutin.

Now I found this black and white print in an early ‘coffee table’ book containing 21 images of the area between Eutin and Plön. However, this image was shot by Friedrich Henning, a photographer based in Plön. The book does not mention a publication date, It is undated, but it seems to be published pre-WW1, and the images are in line with this estimation probably shot between 1910 and 1912.

It is interesting that Giesler’s 1896 photo does not show an extended pier to support the boarding of passengers of the Kellersee boat excursions. Now, around 1910 or 1912, the longer pier caters to new motor boats and the increased number of passengers also confirming the rise of tourism in the area.

Having said that, I prefer Giesler’s photos of the location. Henning opted for a clean approach that focuses on the patio and lake but lacks the coziness of Giesler’s images. Especially the lack of trees in the front left and right in Henning’s image contributes to this effect.

Photographer Friedrich Henning (1835-1921) was a native of Plön, and one of the established photographers in the region. At the age of 31, he married Juliane Dorothea Ernestine Bendt (1846-1919). Ten years later, their son Friedrich Henning (1877-1942) was born who also became a photographer and took over the business from his father. It’s not clear who actually shot this image. It could be either Friedrich senior (as a work late in his life) or Friedrich junior (with his career in full swing.)
