The story behind the image
We re-visited Dublin in August 2003 as part of a long weekend trip and realized that Dublin had changed a lot between 1999 (our first visit) and 2003. And today, in 2025, the changes have increased, especially in the buildings at the River Liffey in the eastern part of the city.
However, few buildings seem to withstand the pressure to change. My image shows 1 City Quay. Already in 2003, this building was run-down and sprayed with graffiti art. Maybe not so nice to look at, but a good match for a city with a large harbour. (I know this from Hamburg, Germany.)
I was surprised that this building is still around. The graffiti artwork has changed multiple times over the past two decades, and the overall damages to the building seem to have increased. However, despite the premium location, the building has not yet been replaced by modern steel and glass.
In a way, I like that.
