The story behind the image

Between Las Vegas and San Francisco I recommend considering a stop in Bishop, one of the biggest towns in the Eastern Sierra. It is nice and tidy and offers everything you might need, including a public recreational park.

We were hungry and stopped at Erick Schat’s Bakery to get some of his delcious pastries as well as one of his specialities, an original sheepherder bread. Next to the bakery, Mr. Schat had placed a pink Cadillac de Ville Convertible from 1956. The Memphis, Tennessee, numberplate read 1-ELVIS. I guess this was not the original, but I like the vintage look. A genuine eyecatcher!

Now two sad points to this story: First, the seats of the car had been rearranged so that the guests of the bakery could sit opposite of each other and enjoy their meal – the car could not be driven like this at. If you look closely, you’ll notice a certain emptiness in the middle of the car. That’s where the seats have been turned around.

Second, a look at archived Google Streetview images reveals that the car has been removed at some point in time between October 2011 and October 2018. Too bad.

I like my photo because it’s easy to imagine this scene in the 1950s and 1960s, and it matches the tidy and clean look of Bishop. The rather low viewpoint and tele angle disguise the ugly details of the seating area as well as the surroundings of the location next to highway 395. And, of course, the pink color really stands out.
