The story behind the image

Kiel in Germany is situated directly at the Baltic Sea, so winters are usually rather mild, and heavy snow is rare. And if there is some snow, it tends to melt away soon.

For my mini-series of winter images I picked this postcard that shows the historic market plaza (‘Markt’) and the majestic Nikolaikirche in the back. Three taxis wait for customers, and one man shovels snow – a gigantic task considering the size of the plaza.

The church is a true gem. It was erected as early as 1242 and still has some very old features inside. Fortunately, these items could be secured early in World War II, and the destruction during the heavy air raid on 22nd May 1944 could not harm them. Kiel Wiki has the full details (in German.)

Strangely enough, this postcard was written and sent in August 1926, i.e. during the high summer. Why would anyone would send a postcard with a winter theme in summer? Weird.
