The story behind the image
In 2005, we stayed in Pitlochry in Scotland for a night, a small town east of Loch Tummel. On our drive from Fort Williams on the west coast we passed Castle Menzies, just 30 minutes outside of Pitlochry. The castle was the seat of the Menzies Clan until 1918 and was involved in the Highlands’ history, including a short stay of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746.
Castle Menzies is a good example of a 16th century fortified house. It is open for visitors but – as always – at a hefty fee (back in 2005, anyway.) Of course, the cost of maintaining the castle must be absurdly high, so I can understand the rationale for the high ticket prices.
The castle also offers packages for weddings and events, and I think it must be a fantastic venue.
Today, the fences next to the road leading up to the castle seem to be gone, which puts the full focus on the castle with no visual distractions whatsoever.
Very nice.
