The story behind the image
Last year we visited the beautiful town Bellaria Igea Marina in Emilia Romagna, Italy.
Next to our hotel was the Torre Saracena. This tower was part of a series of six towers along the Adriatic Coast – from Tavollo to Bellaria – to defend the country against pirates and invasions, which were common dangers in the 16th and 17th century. Back then, the tower was sitting high above the dunes and the beach. Today, it sits in a sea of medium sized buildings.
The Tower of Bellaria Igea Marina is the only one remaining with its original features in place – three floors covered by vaults and an internal spiral staircase. Over time, it has seen various uses and hosts a museum today presenting the history of Bellaria Igea Marina as well as a shell museum (on the upper floor).
